Changing your lifestyle can help you have a happier, healthier and longer life, but it can also give you a sense of purpose.
Our health (both physical and mental) is our most important capital. It is what makes us satisfied, happy, mobile and productive. Over time we have learnt that there is a key connection between our health and clean environment which is why we need a holistic approach that combines healthy eating with mental hygiene and eco-consciousness. Nothing is more satisfying than getting up every morning positive and energised, thinking about things you can do to improve your wellbeing, help everyone around you and protect the planet you live at. This is why more and more people around the world are turning to ecological and sustainable solutions, aiming towards permaculture and living in cleaner natural surroundings, eating organic, plant-based food, leaving zero carbon footprint and making zero waste.
Healthy, Sustainable Food
Wherever you live, eating locally-sourced ingredients means that you will enjoy fresher and healthier food without making a huge impact on the environment. Focusing on seasonal flavours and shopping in local markets will make cooking a more creative process because you can change menus every month and always introduce something new. And whether you have a big or a small garden or just a mini balcony, you can grow your own fruit, plants and vegetables which can reduce your costs and give you a good reason to spend more time outside. Plant-based diets are trending on a global level at the moment so you will find plenty of inspiration on the internet. And don’t forget that taking care of your physical health has a positive effect on your mental health too because by working on a balanced diet and sustainable solutions that are better for the environment makes you feel more content and happier about yourself.
A healthy lifestyle also means using eco-friendly products that are not only improving your health but are also good for the environment as they are improving the quality of air, soil and waters around you. It is therefore important to utilise natural materials that are safe for the environment such as bamboo, hemp, flax or natural jute and replace plastic with compostable or biodegradable packaging. You should also always think about the ways to recycle or repurpose purchased products in order to minimise waste and avoid making a negative impact on the nature around you. Caring about your surroundings will positively affect your physical as well as your mental health.
Whether you live in an urban or rural area and regardless of whether you are attached to a particular location or you are a digital nomad, physical activity is essential for a healthy mind and body. Spending plenty of time outside will clear your lungs, keep you fit and make you feel mentally stronger. Most importantly, you won’t feel like you have wasted your day! Take every opportunity to go out. Even if your job is sitting in front of the screen all day, you can make it more dynamic by working in an outdoor area, exercising in between working tasks or even just by alternating between sitting and standing. And use every opportunity to walk, run or cycle instead of using your car for transport. Health benefits are really worth making an effort and making your everyday life more active.
Don’t forget that poor mental health affects your body and vice versa. A healthier mind will help you have a healthier body, so don’t allow yourself to neglect your inner self. Maintain your mental hygiene by practising breathing techniques, meditation, yoga or mindfulness. All of these methods are great for exercising your mind at home alone, while therapy can help you stay calmer, more balanced and less prone to stress or serious mental illnesses. Consider dance therapy, drama therapy or art therapy if you want to maintain your mental health and enrich your everyday life with a fun, creative activity. Any of these methods will motivate you to take care of your health and environment, but also to love and respect yourself as well as people around you.
Caring for the Planet
It is so important to see a bigger picture. Think beyond your immediate surroundings and start caring for the whole planet. This will give you that extra motivation to do something for your local area, your own property and ultimately for yourself. Even just spreading the word about the importance of a healthy, sustainable lifestyle is already a mission. Not to mention creating your own sustainable solutions, producing your own food and minimising waste. We all feel the need to make our existences meaningful and make ourselves useful. What better way than contributing to the wellbeing of the world around us!
